Dow Canada and Climate Change

As a world leader in chemistry, Dow is uniquely positioned to provide innovative solutions to climate change. We are committed to being part of the solution through the products we make, the science and technology we develop, and the way we optimize our own processes. These components add up to a global strategy to slow, stabilize and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

From 1995-2005, Dow reduced its energy intensity by 22%, thereby contributing to an absolute reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Dow is committed to further improve emission intensity per pound of products by 2.5% per year between 2005 and 2015, and to stabilize growth of greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.

Dow is making contributions to address climate change through innovative products, such as lightweight materials that reduce vehicle weight and improve fuel economy and STYROFOAM™ insulation that reduces home energy use. Our Dow Solar Solutions business will support sustainability by providing advanced materials to the solar panel industry for the renewable generation of electricity.

Dow Canada has been able to reduce its energy intensity is by using renewable or efficient sources of power. Our Varennes, Quebec site uses renewable hydroelectric power as one source of energy. Our Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta site has a natural gas cogeneration power plant, which is an efficient source of energy. These plants reuse waste heat to generate more power, or the resulting steam can be is sent to our plants for use in their production processes.
