Responsible Care in Canada

As a member of the Canadian Chemical Producers’ Association (CCPA), Dow Canada is committed to the principles of Responsible Care® and its Codes of Practice. Responsible Care is a voluntary industry-wide initiative that encourages the safe management of chemicals, from their creation to full-scale manufacturing, and through to ultimate disposal or recycling. It reflects our commitment to safeguard employees, the environment and the communities in which Dow operates.

Responsible Care was developed by CCPA members, including Dow Canada, in 1985 and has since spread to 52 countries around the world.

Through the sharing of information and a rigorous management system of checklists, performance indicators and verification procedures, Responsible Care enables the industry to demonstrate improvements and to develop policies and procedures that address opportunities.

Periodic external verifications, which include independent industry and environmental experts, test compliance with Responsible Care’s codes. Verification team members visit Dow Canada sites, interviewing employees and examining processes. Dow Canada underwent its latest successful verification in the spring of 2007. The results of these verifications have demonstrated that Dow Canada sites continue to meet their commitments to improving environmental and safety performance.

As part of these verifications, recommendations for improvement are made by the external auditors. These recommendations are implemented alongside the steps we are taking to help achieve Dow’s 2015 Sustainability Goals.

®Responsible Care is a certification mark of the Canadian Chemical Producers' Association and Dow Canada is a licensed user of the certification marks.
